Also, let people know what questions you are planning to guide your work in the coming weeks of the institute. Where are you going to go from here?
Congratulations and thank you for a phenomenal first week!
At the end of week one of the institute, take a few minutes to reflect over all that you have done, learned, and shared over the past five days. What do think is going to greatly inform your practice in the coming school year? What has changed your thinking the most? What concerns and questions do you still have.

Our writing groups have really developed since the beginning of the week! It is a huge testament to the courage of our participants that they have adopted each other as a community so quickly. Some are writing poetry this week and some are working on their first fictional narratives. Others are working on dissertations and manuscripts for publication. A diversity of points of view all working together to communicate ideas in writing.
Today, as we decompress, we're thinking about being a connected educator.
On that topic, the CLMOOC is kicking off! The first newsletter came out today, and you can sign up for future ones (including the one we will author) on the right side of the page. Second, go read someone's blog and comment on a post they have made.
To quote Chuck, "I didn't recognize the word 'remediation,' but when I learned what it was I realized I had already been doing it for years." I think we can all agree that the movie Cast Away will have wound up in our Netflix queues by the time we get home this afternoon.
For today's blog reflection, think specifically about the PROCESS you went through while making with things. How did you come up with ideas? How did the tools and materials available to you affect what and how you made? What did you end up with? How did your environment and surroundings affect your composing?
Bonus points: Post a picture of what you made on your blog!
The weather kept us close to home today as our writing groups spread themselves around the education building and some of the adjacent buildings. The U of I has so many great spaces around campus to tuck into to get some writing done.
Maureen gave an excellent presentation over writing for social action (see the slideshow posted below). This was a great opportunity for us to all consider what our students know about the world and how that can lead them to ask deeper questions about things that they'd like to see changed. Getting our students engaged in the topics they study can often be the most difficult part of the job!
Our very awesome afternoon was focused around "composing with things!" After bringing in some random items, we were tasked with making "something with a purpose or intention" using one item of our own, one we collected from another person, and one variable that was given to us blindly. The results were incredible.
Take a chance to reflect on your day. From your writing time, to your making time, how are things coming into focus for you? Are concepts which seemed abstract a few weeks ago starting to take shape? Are you establishing routines for yourself? What did you learn today?
Another great day of the UIWP Summer Institute included a phenomenal presentation by Allison Cox over the RAFT strategy for writing. This approach to writing asks students to investigate the role of speaker and audience in determining appropriateness and form of writing.
If you haven't already, start a new blog on your Weebly. For your first post, write an entry that reflects over the experiences you had today from writing time to book discussions. How did it go? What are your expectations for the institute? What are your fears? If you have time, find another participant's blog, read and comment.
