Looks like everybody was eager to jump back into the swing of things for week two of the UIWP Summer Institute! Groups were off and running as soon as they could be. Wouldn't it be great if you had an hour each day to focus on your own writing?
In the late morning Tiffanie introduced us to zines and how to use a flexible curriculum to make and design them in our classrooms. Thanks to their strong history as self-made artifacts representing marginalized groups, zines have a unique ability to speak to diverse groups of students. |
It was incredibly interesting hearing about this history of zines, but even more so thinking about how these little publications can be so powerful and so relevant in our world today. This truly was an awesome demo that got us to think about how we can allow students to pull in their own experiences and knowledge to create strong writing. How might you use zines in your classroom?
Our afternoon opened with a discussion of how we can remediate ideas as opposed to things. We are taking excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and imagining them in different forms. What would happen if we played with place or relationships? How would the story change if major parts of the play didn't exist? Over the next two days we will work in groups to reimagine a canonical script and remediate it dramatically (pun intended). |
It's hard to explain just how awesome it is to see our fellows reenacting famous scenes from what might be the most famously-read Shakespeare play, but rest assured, the videos will be posted tomorrow.
